The standard Pt100 RTD (100 ohms at 0 degrees Celsius) using IEC 60751 Class A or Class AA elements delivers accuracy of 0.15 to 0.3 degrees Celsius at the measurement point.
RTD assemblies for process applications combine the sensing element with a protective sheath, connection head, and thermowell, similar to thermocouple assemblies. Thin-film and wire-wound element constructions are available, with wire-wound elements providing superior accuracy and stability for demanding measurement applications. Standard temperature range for Pt100 RTDs is minus 200 to 600 degrees Celsius, extending to 850 degrees Celsius for special high-temperature designs.
Temperature transmitters mounted in the sensor connection head or on a DIN rail in the marshalling cabinet convert the RTD resistance signal to a standard 4-20 mA current loop or digital protocol (HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus PA) for transmission to the DCS. Head-mounted transmitters are standard in GCC plants, reducing noise pickup on long cable runs and providing sensor diagnostics including wire break detection and sensor drift alarms.
Procurement managers should specify RTD accuracy class and transmitter accuracy as separate line items to ensure the combined measurement uncertainty meets the process control requirement. For 3-wire RTD configurations (standard in most GCC plants), use matched cable resistance or specify 4-wire RTDs for highest accuracy. Include sensor-transmitter matching certificates from the manufacturer for custody transfer and fiscal metering applications.
