Barite Suppliers, Saudi Arabia
Barite (barium sulphate) is a high-density mineral used primarily as a weighting agent in oil and gas drilling fluids, and also in paints, plastics, rubber, and radiation shielding applications. The GCC's massive oil and gas drilling activity makes it one of the world's largest barite-consuming regions. Procurement managers require barite meeting API 13A specifications for drilling-grade material, with strict limits on specific gravity, particle size, and soluble alkaline earth metals.

Barite (BaSO4) is a dense, chemically inert mineral with a specific gravity of 4.2 to 4.5, making it the primary weighting agent used in oil and gas drilling fluids to control formation pressure and prevent blowouts. Drilling-grade barite must meet American Petroleum Institute (API) Specification 13A standards for specific gravity, particle size distribution, and soluble calcium and magnesium content. Non-drilling grades serve the paints and coatings industry as a filler, the automotive sector for sound-deadening compounds, and the healthcare industry for radiation shielding concrete and barium-based diagnostic imaging.
The UAE and Saudi Arabia are among the world's top consumers of drilling-grade barite, driven by the region's extensive onshore and offshore drilling programmes operated by Saudi Aramco, ADNOC, and numerous international and national oil companies. Regional demand for API-grade barite consistently exceeds one million tonnes annually. Procurement managers should specify barite by specific gravity (minimum 4.20 for API grades), residue on 75-micron sieve (maximum 3 percent per API 13A), and soluble alkaline earth metals content. Colour, brightness, and barium sulphate purity become important additional specifications for paint and industrial filler grades.
Barite is sourced from mines in India, Morocco, China, Mexico, and regional deposits in Oman and Iran. GCC-based grinding plants in Jebel Ali, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Dammam process imported crude lump into micronized drilling-grade and industrial-grade powders. Buyers should evaluate supplier grinding capacity, quality control laboratory capabilities, inventory levels, and ability to supply in bulk pneumatic tanker, big bag, or multi-wall paper sack packaging. Supply agreements linked to rig count forecasts help ensure allocation during periods of high drilling activity.
