Argon is a noble gas used primarily as a shielding gas in TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding, in steel and aluminium production (AOD and ladle refining), electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, and as a fill gas for insulated glazing units. It is supplied as compressed gas in standard and jumbo cylinders, in multi-cylinder pallets, and as liquid argon (LAR) in cryogenic tankers for high-volume consumers. Argon purity is typically 99.999% for welding and electronics applications.
In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, argon consumption is driven by the large structural steel fabrication industry, aluminium smelting (EGA in the UAE is one of the world's largest), offshore and onshore pipeline welding, and precision manufacturing. TIG welding of stainless steel, aluminium, and exotic alloys in the region's oil and gas fabrication yards is the single largest application. Argon-CO2 and argon-helium mixtures are also consumed in significant volumes for specific welding applications. Local production from ASUs in Jebel Ali, Abu Dhabi, and Jubail ensures stable supply.
When procuring argon, specify purity grade, delivery format (cylinders, pallets, or bulk LAR), and monthly consumption volume. For welding operations, also consider whether pure argon or an argon-based mixture is appropriate for your materials and welding processes. Evaluate suppliers on delivery reliability, cylinder exchange efficiency, bulk tank telemetry and auto-reorder capabilities, and pricing structure. Volume-based contracts with a single supplier typically offer 15-25% savings over spot cylinder purchases.
