Heat exchangers are the most numerous equipment items in any refinery, with a typical GCC refinery complex containing thousands of individual exchangers performing heating, cooling, condensing, and reboiling duties across every process unit. Shell-and-tube heat exchangers (designed per TEMA standards) handle the majority of process-to-process and process-to-utility heat transfer. Air-cooled heat exchangers (per API 661) replace water-cooled condensers and coolers in the GCC's water-scarce environment. Plate heat exchangers (per API 662) are used for clean, moderate-pressure services. Procurement should specify ASME VIII Division 1 for pressure containment, TEMA class (R for refinery service), and tube material appropriate to the corrosion environment (carbon steel, admiralty brass, duplex stainless, or titanium). For air-cooled units in the GCC, design ambient temperature is typically 50-55 degrees Celsius with provisions for plot cooler recirculation during summer. Buyers should verify the fabricator's ASME U-stamp and TEMA qualifications and request witnessed shop tests.
