Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), also referred to as GRP (glass reinforced plastic), is a composite material combining glass fibre reinforcement with a polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy resin matrix. In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, FRP is used extensively as a corrosion-resistant, lightweight alternative to steel and aluminium in cooling towers, wastewater treatment plants, desalination facilities, offshore platforms, architectural facades and industrial structures.
GCC-based FRP fabricators produce a wide range of products including pultruded structural profiles (I-beams, channels, angles, flat bars), hand-laminated tanks and vessels, filament-wound pipes and ducts, architectural cladding panels, walkway systems, guard rails, cable trays and custom-molded components. The material's immunity to corrosion makes it particularly valuable in the Gulf's salt-laden coastal atmosphere, where conventional carbon steel requires constant maintenance.
Procurement managers should evaluate FRP suppliers on resin system selection (isophthalic polyester for general corrosion, vinyl ester for aggressive chemicals, epoxy for structural performance), glass content and laminate schedule, fire performance (self-extinguishing vinyl ester or phenolic resin systems for offshore and building interiors), and compliance with applicable standards such as ASTM D4097 for pultruded profiles, BS 4994 for vessels, and NORSOK R-001 for offshore gratings. Request test certificates covering tensile, flexural and interlaminar shear strength, and confirm that the fabricator holds ISO 9001 quality certification and employs qualified laminators.
