Cathodic protection (CP) systems are an indispensable corrosion prevention measure for buried pipelines, storage tank bottoms, marine structures, and reinforced concrete foundations throughout the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The GCC's aggressive environment β featuring chloride-rich sabkha soils, high water tables, seawater immersion, and elevated temperatures β creates conditions that can corrode unprotected steel at rates exceeding 0.5 mm per year, making robust CP design a prerequisite for infrastructure longevity.
Two CP methods are deployed: sacrificial anode systems, which use zinc, magnesium, or aluminum alloy anodes that corrode preferentially to protect the structure, and impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP), which uses an external DC power source and inert anodes (such as MMO-coated titanium or silicon iron) to drive protective current. Sacrificial systems are simpler and maintenance-light, suited for well-coated pipelines and small structures. ICCP systems provide higher current output for long pipelines, poorly coated structures, or high-resistivity soils.
Procurement managers should work with a NACE-certified CP design engineer to specify the system. Key procurement items include anodes (type, weight, chemical composition), rectifiers (output voltage and current, cooling method), reference electrodes, test stations, and CP monitoring equipment. Verify anode chemical composition meets DNV RP B401 (marine) or NACE standards (onshore). All system components should be rated for the environmental conditions including temperature, soil resistivity, and moisture. CP system installation and commissioning should be performed by NACE CP Level 2 or higher certified technicians, who are readily available through regional corrosion engineering companies in the GCC.
